New York City is home to a community of heroes who dedicate their lives to caring for residents who are often overlooked in the urban jungle. One is Amina Martin, a Russian immigrant living in Brooklyn. His small apartment doubles as a sanctuary for injured and abandoned birds.
Among the many birds in Amina Martín's home is a pigeon named Anfisa with ombre gray plumage. Anfisa has an unusual attachment to her husband, Mr. Martin, and shows her affection by laying her eggs on her husband's pillow.
Martin is just one of a handful of individuals in New York City's boroughs dedicated to rehabilitating creatures that many consider pests. From injured pigeons to orphaned opossums and squirrels, these compassionate people turn their homes into makeshift wildlife hospitals and their living rooms into sanctuaries for those in need.
Despite the challenges and sacrifices they face, these wildlife shelters operate under the radar, often at odds with city regulations and landlords. Many of them document their tireless work on social media platforms, amassing followers who admire their dedication to misunderstood creatures.
But why do they do that? For these rehabilitators, it's more than just caring for injured animals. It's about fostering a deeper connection with nature and its environment. They see these creatures not as nuisances, but as integral parts of the city's ecosystem. In a city where hustle and bustle often makes people feel disconnected from nature, rehabilitators find purpose in their work.
