Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Managing Director William Ruto has announced new waste management fees for vessels entering Mombasa Port.
In a statement released on Saturday, April 27, Kenya Ports Authority collects the fee On behalf of Mombasa County Government, effective May 15, 2024.
“The Mombasa County Solid Waste Management (Amendment) Act 2023 obliges the Mombasa County Government to levy a solid waste management fee on vessels docking at Mombasa Port,” the statement reads in part. .
The fee includes US$2 per 100 tons based on the vessel's registered gross tonnage.

The minimum weekly ship fare is USD 200 and the maximum is USD 1,500, equivalent to approximately 26,600 Kenyan shillings and 199,500 Kenyan shillings respectively.
Ruto further pointed out that vessels owned or operated by the government will be exempt from summary charges, except for vessels engaged in commercial transactions.
Other exemptions include vessels owned by KPA, licensed ferries operating only within ports, and vessels trading between Kenyan ports.
Vessels with a registered gross tonnage of less than 500; Vessel at anchor Dredgers whose normal navigation does not exceed port limits do not pay detailed charges.
“All port users are requested to be mindful of and co-operate with the Kenya Ports Authority in the implementation of the Mombasa County Solid Waste Management (Amendment) Act 2023,” the statement directed.
In another statement, Also promotes KPA Collection of parking fees for heavy vehicles and commercial vehicles used by port users within Mombasa County.
Affected users were further advised to consult their county's Director of Finance and Economic Planning for further instructions regarding the new directive.
“This applies to Grain Bulk Handling Limited, Agol Limited, empty container warehouses, refineries and other port users who utilize port terminals without accessing port premises.”
